4 Days Roaming

4 Days Roaming

My husband and I took a 12-day trip to Europe and spent 4 days in Rome. I want to share my on-a-budget experience and give you some helpful tips. Let's dive in and start with the basics!

General tips:
- Sunscreen
- Comfortable walking shoes
- European Adapter Plug - highly important! Don't be cheap on the adapter you buy. You may end up regretting it later.
- Portable charger - life saver if you're out and about all day, which most likely you will be.
- Euros! Most places accept credit cards but it's a great idea to have about 100 in Euros as emergency cash.
- Download The Rick Steves Europe audio guide before you head out. His walking tours around the city and some museums are completely free!

Where to stay:
We stayed in the centrally located neighborhood of Rome called Trastevere. We booked an Airbnb and stayed with a local, Maurilio. In this Airbnb, you share the apartment with the owner, Maurilio, but he is a very respectful and responsive host who gave us our privacy and made us feel very welcome.  As previously mentioned, Trastevere is centrally located and has a great nightlife with plenty of bars, restaurants, cafes and gelato shops.  If you're up to get some steps in, the apartment is about a 25 minute walk to the Colosseum.

Vatican City:
PURCHASE IN ADVANCE! If you're thinking of going to The Vatican Museums and/or St. Peter's Basilica, buy your tickets in advance! We purchased our tickets for the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica through Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi .  Our total was about 70 euros each person (includes an audio guide).  Once you purchase, read your email carefully and arrive at the meet-up point early! You do NOT want to miss the guide who will walk you over to the entrance. We arrived about 45 minutes prior to our scheduled time. I can't stress this enough and HIGHLY suggest that you purchase your tickets in advance because the line to purchase tickets outside the museum can be over 2 hours long! One more thing with The Vatican; this is an all-day activity or at the minimum 3 hours, so plan your day accordingly. With that said, I advise not to go to The Vatican until you've had a full nights sleep; otherwise, you'll be quite exhausted.

Colosseum:
This last trip was my second time in Rome. The first time, in 2016, we did not purchase tickets in advance. We actually bought them same day, but with this more recent trip, September 2022, we purchased front of the line, guide, and audio a day prior. Same-day general admission tickets were already sold out by noon. In this case, just like with The Vatican, buy your tickets in advance.

Thanks for reading thus far. Come back next week for pt. 2 where I’ll talk about the best gelato spots, Trevi Fountain, and hopping on a train to Florence.
